Professor Jason Smith joined the Royal Navy and qualified in medicine from Newcastle University in 1992. He underwent specialist training in emergency medicine in London, Plymouth and Sydney before being appointed as a consultant at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth in 2005. He is currently the UK Defence Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Academic Department of Military Emergency Medicine, Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, Birmingham. His research interests include the management of patients with life-threatening haemorrhage.
